Why Choose Rubber for Your Garage Floor?
- Oil & fuel resistant — Nitrile rubber withstands petrol, diesel, brake fluid and engine oil without staining
- Anti-slip certified — R11 slip resistance rating keeps footing safe on wet or oily surfaces
- Protects concrete — Cushions the subfloor against dropped tools, jacks, and vehicle loads
- Thermal insulation — Warmer underfoot than bare concrete in winter
- Easy DIY installation — Interlocking tiles need no adhesive, no specialist tools
- Cut to any size — Rubber rolls and sheets cut cleanly with a Stanley knife on-site
- 15–20 year lifespan — Commercial-grade rubber built to outlast cheaper alternatives
Rubber Garage Flooring for Every Budget
Budget option: Plain SBR rubber sheet rolls from £12/m² — cut to fit any garage size, loose-laid over concrete, zero fuss.
Mid-range: Studded rubber garage matting rolls and checker plate rubber from £14/m² — anti-slip surface with a professional finish.
Premium: Heavy duty nitrile interlocking garage floor tiles from £18/m² — oil resistant, vehicle rated, and fully replaceable tile by tile.
How to Choose Garage Floor Matting
The right rubber garage floor matting depends on your use case:
- Parking a car: 7–10mm interlocking garage rubber flooring tiles rated for vehicle loads. PVC or rubber.
- Home workshop: Studded or ribbed rubber matting rolls in 4–6mm — comfortable underfoot for long periods standing.
- Professional mechanic's garage: Nitrile rubber tiles or rolls — maximum chemical resistance for daily oil and fuel contact.
- Workbench area: Anti-fatigue garage mats with cushioning to reduce fatigue during precision work.
- MOT bay / car showroom: Smooth or checker plate rubber garage floor tiles for a clean, professional look.
Garage Flooring Installation Guide
Interlocking tiles: Measure your garage, start from the centre or one corner, click tiles together. Edge trim pieces finish the perimeter. A standard single garage (15m²) takes 1–2 hours. No adhesive required.
Rubber matting rolls: Roll out, cut to length with a Stanley knife or scissors, lay flat. For permanent installation, apply contact adhesive to concrete first. For temporary/removable use, loose-lay is sufficient.
Rubber sheet protection: Pre-cut or buy per-metre and cut on-site. Lay under vehicle parking areas or fix to workbench tops with adhesive.
Garage Rubber Flooring — Common Questions
Can I put rubber garage matting over existing tiles?
Yes. Rubber matting and interlocking tiles lay over most existing floor surfaces including concrete, ceramic tiles, and screed. Ensure the existing floor is level and clean before laying.
Will rubber flooring stop my garage smelling of oil?
Rubber garage flooring prevents oil soaking into the concrete subfloor, making spills much easier to clean up. The rubber itself is odour-neutral. Existing oil stains in concrete should be cleaned before laying.
What is the cheapest rubber flooring for a garage?
SBR rubber sheet rolls start from £12/m² and are the most cost-effective option for garage rubber matting. For larger areas, our rubber matting rolls sold per metre offer the best value. Free UK delivery applies to all orders.
Do rubber garage floor tiles cope with UK winters?
Yes. Our rubber and PVC garage tiles are designed for UK climate conditions. They do not crack in cold weather and handle moisture, condensation, and temperature changes without warping or shrinking.

Garage & Workshop Flooring UK — Specification by Use Case
Home Workshop / DIY Garage
8-10mm rubber mats or PVC tiles with oil-resistant compound. Anti-fatigue matting at workbench positions. Protection from dropped tools. Standard SBR for dry DIY workshops. Nitrile required if any vehicle maintenance performed.
Professional Motor Trade Workshop
Nitrile (NBR) rubber mandatory — mineral oil, hydraulic fluid, and fuel contamination are sustained and unavoidable in vehicle servicing. R12 slip resistance. 8-10mm minimum. Vehicle lifts require rubber-topped steel plate systems — standard rubber not rated for lift pad point loads.
Home Gym Garage
15-20mm interlocking SBR rubber tiles for free weights zones. 5mm acoustic underlay if first-floor installation. EPDM for outdoor or partly-outdoor garages. 25mm+ for Olympic lifting zones.
Show Car & Classic Car Garage
PVC interlocking tiles: good oil resistance for drips, clean professional appearance, easy to lift and clean beneath. 5-7mm for domestic car loads. No specialist installation required.
Oil Resistance Rule
SBR rubber — the most common and most economical rubber — swells, softens, and loses slip resistance in petroleum oil contact within months. Nitrile rubber (NBR) maintains structural integrity and R12 slip resistance in sustained oil-wet environments for 8-12 years. The cost premium (60-80% more per m² than SBR) is recovered within the first SBR replacement cycle.

Garage Flooring — Oil Resistance, Fire Safety & EV Considerations
The Oil Resistance Rule
Standard SBR rubber (most common, most economical) swells and degrades in petroleum oil contact within months. In any garage where vehicle maintenance is performed — even occasional oil changes — SBR will fail. Nitrile (NBR) rubber maintains its structure and R12 slip resistance in sustained oil-wet environments for 8-12 years. The cost premium (60-80% more per m²) is recovered within the first SBR replacement cycle. The specification decision is simple: SBR for dry show garages and storage; nitrile for any vehicle servicing.
Fire Safety in Attached Garages
Building Regulations Part B applies to garages attached to dwellings. Both PVC and rubber garage flooring are classified as limited combustibility — acceptable for attached garages. Do not use EVA foam or polyurethane foam tiles in attached domestic garages — these are highly combustible and could contribute to fire spread to the main dwelling.
Electric Vehicle Garages
EV adoption is driving specific garage flooring considerations. EV charging cables on garage floors create trip hazards — rubber cable cover ramps in rubber provide protection while maintaining vehicle access. EV weights (300-500kg heavier than ICE equivalent) do not create additional flooring specification requirements for standard PVC or rubber tiles — both rated well above EV vehicle weights.

Professional Installation Guide — Rubber Matting
Subfloor Preparation (Critical)
- Level: Floor must be flat within ±3mm over 3m — use levelling compound for depressions, grind high spots
- Moisture: Concrete below 75% RH for bonded installation — test with hygrometer, new concrete minimum 28 days cure
- Contamination: Remove all oil, paint, adhesive — mechanical scarification then vacuum
- Temperature: Both subfloor and rubber at 15-25°C — cold rubber doesn't lie flat, cold adhesive doesn't cure
Roll Installation Steps
- Unroll and allow to acclimatise flat for 24 hours at room temperature
- Dry-fit the roll, mark cutting lines, cut to size before adhesive
- Apply SBR-based contact adhesive to both subfloor and rubber underside
- Allow both surfaces to become touch-dry (10-20 minutes at room temperature)
- Position one edge carefully — contact adhesive cannot be repositioned once pressed
- Use a 75kg+ floor roller across the full surface for complete contact
- Apply edge trim or threshold strips to all exposed edges
- Do not allow heavy traffic for 24 hours
Cutting Rubber Matting
Up to 6mm: Stanley knife, fresh blade, steel straight edge. Score firmly and fold against cut. 6-15mm: jigsaw with rubber blade or heavy scissors. 15mm+: bandsaw or circular saw. Complex shapes: cardboard template first, then transfer to rubber. Cut at room temperature — cold rubber tears.
Maintenance
Daily: sweep or vacuum (grit is abrasive under foot traffic). Weekly: mop with warm water and neutral pH (6-8) cleaner. For oil: water-based degreaser (no petroleum solvents on SBR). For EPDM: most commercial cleaners acceptable. Replace when surface profile worn flat — a flat mat has lost its anti-slip and anti-fatigue benefit regardless of visual condition.
