π€ General Rubber Matting Questions
1. What is rubber matting made from?
Most rubber matting is made from recycled crumb rubber (typically from end-of-life tyres), which is compressed and bonded using a polyurethane binder. This makes it durable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. Some specialist mats use virgin rubber or SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) for specific applications. Our rubber matting range uses high-quality recycled rubber for maximum resilience.
2. How thick should rubber matting be?
Thickness depends on the application:
- Light use / anti-fatigue: 6β10mm
- Gym cardio areas: 8β15mm
- Weightlifting / CrossFit / deadlifts: 15β20mm or thicker
- Horse stables: 17β25mm (we recommend 17mm minimum)
- Playground safety: Depends on fall height β consult our team
Our gym flooring collection covers 8mm to 20mm options suitable for all training types.
3. Does rubber matting smell? How long does it last?
New rubber matting β especially recycled rubber β has a distinct rubbery odour when first unpackaged. This is completely normal and not harmful. The smell typically fades within 1β4 weeks, especially with ventilation. To speed up the process: unroll mats in a well-ventilated space, wipe with a damp cloth, and allow to air out before installation.
4. Is rubber matting waterproof?
Rubber is naturally water-resistant but not fully waterproof. Solid rubber mats resist surface moisture well. Recycled rubber mats with an open or textured surface may absorb small amounts of water but will dry out. For outdoor or wet environments, ensure proper drainage below the mat.
5. Can rubber matting be used outdoors?
Yes. Most rubber matting is UV-stable and weatherproof. Our grass protection mats and heavy-duty rubber rolls are specifically designed for outdoor use. Avoid prolonged submersion in standing water.
6. How long does rubber matting last?
Quality rubber matting can last 10β20+ years with proper care. Commercial gym facilities often report 10+ years of life from quality mats. Factors affecting lifespan include thickness, traffic levels, cleaning regime, and UV exposure (outdoor mats).
7. Is rubber matting safe for children?
Yes. Our playground safety matting is designed to meet UK safety standards for impact attenuation. Rubber matting does not splinter, chip, or create sharp edges. Always check the specific product's safety rating for the application (e.g., critical fall height for playgrounds).
ποΈ Gym Flooring FAQs
8. What weight can gym rubber mats support?
Rubber gym mats are designed to support heavy loads. Standard 15β20mm mats comfortably handle commercial gym equipment including power racks, Smith machines, and dumbbells. For deadlifting platforms, we recommend 20mm+ solid rubber. The floor beneath the mat must also be structurally sound β rubber distributes load but doesn't reinforce weak subfloors.
9. Will rubber mats protect my floor from dropped weights?
Rubber matting significantly reduces impact damage from dropped weights. 15β20mm mats absorb vibration and protect concrete or wood subfloors from dents and cracks. For regular Olympic lifting or heavy drops, consider a stall mat or 20mm horse mat as a deadlift platform β these are extremely dense and impact-resistant.
10. What's the best gym flooring for a home gym?
For most home gyms:
- Cardio & light weights: 15mm interlocking rubber tiles β easy to install, modular
- Free weights / barbell area: 15β20mm rubber rolls or horse stall mats
- Full coverage: Rubber rolls in 1m or 1.25m widths cut to size
11. How do I install gym rubber flooring?
For most home and commercial gyms:
- Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level
- For tiles: start from the centre of the room and work outwards; interlock edges
- For rolls: unroll, allow to acclimatise for 24β48 hours, then trim to fit
- Use double-sided tape or rubber adhesive at edges and joins to prevent lifting
- Leave a 5mm expansion gap around walls
12. Do gym mats need to be glued down?
In most cases, no β the weight of the matting holds it in place. However, gluing is recommended in: high-traffic commercial areas, anywhere mats might shift during exercise, and at doorways or ramp edges. Use a solvent-free rubber flooring adhesive if gluing.
13. Can rubber gym flooring go over underfloor heating?
Yes, but with caution. Rubber has low thermal conductivity, so underfloor heating efficiency is reduced. Keep the floor surface temperature below 27Β°C to avoid degradation of the rubber binder. Thinner mats (8β10mm) work better over UFH.
π΄ Stable Mat FAQs
14. What size stable mats do I need?
Our stable mats typically come in standard sizes (e.g., 6ft Γ 4ft / 1.83m Γ 1.22m). To calculate coverage:
- Measure your stable length Γ width in metres
- Divide by the mat area (e.g., 2.23 mΒ² per 6Γ4 mat)
- Round up to the next whole mat
- Add 1 mat as a cutting allowance
A typical 3.6m Γ 3.6m stable requires approximately 7β8 mats depending on layout.
15. How thick should stable mats be?
We recommend a minimum of 17mm for horses. 17mm provides excellent cushioning, joint protection, and reduces bedding usage. For ponies or smaller animals, 12β15mm may suffice. Thicker mats (20mm+) offer superior insulation in cold climates.
16. Do stable mats drain properly?
Solid rubber stable mats are not porous β urine and water sit on top. This is actually beneficial for hygiene: liquid is easily sluiced away. The key is ensuring the stable floor underneath has a slight gradient (1β2%) towards a drain. Some stable owners create channels between mats for drainage.
17. Are rubber stable mats safe for horses?
Yes. Rubber stable mats are widely recommended by equine vets for:
- Reducing concussion on joints (especially useful for older horses)
- Providing a non-slip surface
- Reducing bedding requirements (saving costs)
- Easier mucking out
Ensure mats are laid flat with no gaps or curled edges that could cause a trip hazard.
18. How do I clean rubber stable mats?
Daily: Remove droppings and wet bedding. Sluice with water. Weekly: Lift mats, clean underneath with disinfectant, rinse, allow to dry before replacing. Our mats are resistant to urine, ammonia, and common stable disinfectants.
πΏ Grass Mat FAQs
19. What are grass protection mats?
Grass protection mats (also called ground reinforcement mats or grass grids) are open-cell plastic or rubber grids laid over grass to distribute load and prevent rutting. Grass grows up through the cells, maintaining green coverage while supporting vehicles, pedestrians, or events.
20. Can I drive a car over grass mats?
Yes β that's their primary purpose. Our heavy-duty grass mats are rated to support cars, vans, and light commercial vehicles (up to 350 tonnes/mΒ² for heavy-duty variants). Always check the product's load rating. Ensure the ground below is firm and well-draining before installation.
21. How do I install grass protection mats?
- Mow the grass short (under 5cm)
- Level the ground and address any soft spots
- Lay mats in a brick-bond pattern (offset joins)
- Interlock adjacent panels using the built-in connectors
- Pin perimeter mats to the ground using ground anchors
- Water well after installation to encourage grass regrowth through cells
22. Can grass mats be removed and reused?
Yes β this is one of their key advantages for events and temporary car parks. Simply lift, stack, and store. Our mats can be reused many times over if handled and stored correctly (stacked flat, out of prolonged direct sunlight).

π§ Installation FAQs
27. Do I need a professional to install rubber matting?
In most cases, no. Rubber matting is DIY-friendly. Interlocking tiles require no tools or adhesive. Rubber rolls can be cut with a sharp Stanley knife and straight edge. Stable mats are heavy (a 6Γ4 mat weighs approx. 25β30kg) and benefit from two people for installation. For large commercial projects, we can recommend installation contractors.
28. Can rubber mats be cut to fit?
Yes. Use a sharp utility knife (Stanley knife) and a straight edge. Score the mat several times along the cut line, then bend to snap β or cut all the way through on thicker mats. For tight curved cuts, a jigsaw with a rubber-cutting blade works well. We also offer a cut-to-size service on selected products β ask at checkout.
29. What subfloor do I need for rubber matting?
Rubber matting works on most subfloors including concrete, wood, tarmac, and compacted hardcore. The subfloor should be:
- Level (no more than 3β5mm variation over 3m)
- Clean and dry
- Structurally sound
For outdoor installs, ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging beneath the mat.
π§Ή Maintenance & Care FAQs
30. How do I clean rubber matting?
Routine cleaning: sweep or vacuum to remove loose debris, then mop with warm water and a mild detergent (avoid oil-based cleaners β they degrade rubber). For disinfecting: diluted bleach (1:10) or specialist gym floor cleaner works well. Rinse well after using any chemical cleaner. Do not use petrol, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.
31. How do I stop rubber mats from smelling?
To reduce rubber odour:
- Ventilate the room well, especially for the first few weeks
- Wipe mats with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water (neutralises odour)
- Sprinkle baking soda, leave for a few hours, then vacuum
- Use a rubber-safe mat deodoriser
The smell diminishes naturally within 2β6 weeks.
32. Can rubber mats be pressure washed?
Yes β pressure washing is safe for most rubber mats and is excellent for stable mats and outdoor matting. Use a medium pressure setting. Allow to dry fully before replacing in enclosed areas.
