Industrial environments place greater demands on floor matting than almost any other setting. Forklifts, chemical spills, continuous multi-shift foot traffic, dropped loads, and regulatory compliance requirements all need to be addressed in a single specification. This guide covers everything UK facilities managers, health and safety officers, and procurement teams need to know about industrial rubber matting.

What Makes Industrial Rubber Matting Different?

Industrial rubber matting differs from commercial or domestic matting in three key respects: load rating, chemical resistance, and compliance requirements. A 10-tonne forklift exerts enormous localised pressure on its small contact patch — matting that performs well under foot traffic will compress permanently and lose slip resistance within weeks under regular forklift use. Getting the specification right upfront saves significant cost. A wrongly specified mat that fails after six months costs more in replacement and downtime than the correct specification would have cost initially.

Load Ratings

  • 10mm SBR: Rated for pedestrian traffic and light pallet trucks (under 1t axle load). Suitable for walkways, production line areas, inspection stations.
  • 15mm SBR/Nitrile: Rated for forklifts to 3t axle load. Suitable for general warehouse aisle matting, loading bay areas with regular FLT traffic.
  • 22mm Heavy Duty: Maximum load rating — rated for heavy plant, 5t+ forklift traffic. Suitable for loading dock approaches and vehicle access routes.

Compound Selection — Critical for Industrial Use

SBR for Oil-Free Environments

Standard compound for dry goods warehouses, assembly lines, print works, textile factories. Do not use SBR where oil, fuel, or solvents are present — it swells and degrades rapidly in petroleum environments.

Nitrile for Oil and Chemical Exposure

Mandatory specification wherever petroleum products are present. Engineering workshops, vehicle maintenance bays, hydraulics areas. Our nitrile rubber matting covers 3mm to 10mm in widths to 1.2m.

Food-Safe Compounds

Food production and pharmaceutical facilities require EC 1935/2004 compliant compounds. Typically nitrile or EPDM-based in blue or red for HACCP zone identification. Contact us to specify food-safe rubber matting.

Slip Resistance Requirements

The HSE reports over 11,000 serious injuries annually from workplace slips and trips — making slip prevention a legal obligation under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. Rubber matting slip resistance is classified R9-R13 to DIN 51130:

  • R10: Standard factory floor walkways, wet commercial areas
  • R11: Industrial kitchens, wash bays, food processing
  • R12-R13: Slaughterhouses, chemical processing, extreme conditions

All heavy-duty industrial rubber matting in our range includes R-rating specifications on individual product pages.

Anti-Fatigue Matting at Standing Workstations

HSE guidance on preventing musculoskeletal disorders in manufacturing recommends anti-fatigue matting at all standing workstations where operators stand for more than 90 minutes continuously. Anti-fatigue rubber matting creates micro-movements in leg muscles that maintain blood circulation and reduce lower back strain. Specify closed-cell anti-fatigue rubber (not foam), 9-12mm thickness, with bevelled edges to eliminate trip hazards.

Regulatory Compliance Checklist

  • Slip resistance rating specified and documented (DIN 51130 R-value)
  • Load rating verified against actual maximum FLT axle load
  • Compound specified against chemical exposure (SBR for oil-free; nitrile for oil)
  • Food-contact areas using EC 1935/2004 compliant compound
  • Anti-fatigue matting at all standing workstations over 90 min continuous use
  • Edge trims installed in all forklift traffic areas
